We all have hard times that come up in life – struggles, problems, issues. “Its good for you! It builds character in your life!” is one of my favorite things to say to those around me (some say I am obnoxious). This is especially fun with the young people in my Youth Group. And you know they love to hear me say that! While I was preparing for one of our Youth meetings a few weeks back I finally found Biblical foundation for my little saying:
Romans 5:3-5 (NLT)
3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.
I like to have fun with this but it is a completely different story when it is me having the problem. Many times my friends say back to me, “it builds character!” (I do reap what I sow.) In today’s reading Proverbs 24:10 (NLT) says, “If you fail under pressure, your strength is too small.” I guess I need to listen to these words of wisdom and allow hard times to make me stronger. We all do! We all need more character in our lives. This will build our hope and that Hope will not disappoint.
