Family Bike Ride Adventure

I was amazed as we started the day on Sunday.  Our girls let us stay in bed until almost 9:30 AM!! This is a miracle!  We had had a late night at church on Saturday. Maybe that helped a little. Finally Abby said, “Is anybody going to get up and make breakfast for us?” Soon we were all downstairs having eggs and cereal.

Later in the day, since it was Computer Free Sunday we went outside. Linda started picking blackberries and the girls and I helped out some.

Sarah was a huge help. She loves to help. Abby and I helped as well but we get distracted easily. Pretty soon Abby went to ride her bike. She wanted me to ride with her and so we thought it would be nice to go on a bike ride together as a family.

Abby and I were already riding and so we rode to the end of the street and back while Linda and Sarah finished up with the blackberries. Linda thought that we left without her and Sarah but we got back about the time she was calling me.

Linda took one of our bikes down to her sisters house to see if she could find the bike seat we wanted to use. (Somehow, many of our things end up down at her sister’s house and vice versa.) It ended up being attached to one of their bikes so she walked that one back. The tires on it were completely flat. That should have been our first clue to not take that bike.

I pumped up the tires, with Sarah’s help of course. She stands in front of the pump with her hands on the plunger while I push it up and down. At this point she is only slightly taller than the pump.

Once the tires were all pumped up we started down the road. Sarah rode in the bike seat on Linda’s borrowed bike and Abby and I rode our own. Abby said, “Can we please not go to the Reservoir, because my legs will get tired!”

Then, less than two block from our house the bike seat on started to come loose and started rubbing on the back tire. I did not bring my tool box with me, go figure, so we had to turn back. I ended up walking the bike back and Linda rode my bike. Sarah was quite distraught about not being able to ride in the bike seat so I put her up on my shoulders and walked her and the bike back.

Once back, Linda took the broken bike back to her sister’s house and I hooked up our bike trailer to my bike. When Linda came back with her bike, we loaded both girls into the trailer and headed out to try again.

From this point the ride was very enjoyable. We ended up riding out to the Reservoir and we stopped at a park and let the girls play for a while. They swang and slid and climbed on all the monkey bars. They like to play with all their might.

Then we loaded them back in the trailer and started to head back home. We took a detour through the cemetery. It is really beautiful there and we have several close friends that we like to remember. We stopped at one point. I turned around and this is what I saw:

Apparently the activity had wore Abby out. She was gone! She has always fallen asleep easily, especially when strapped into a seat. Sarah was still going strong and playing peek-a-boo for the camera.

By the time we got back home Abby had completely folded over and was still sound asleep.

It was a beautiful day and a very enjoyable time with the family – once we finally got started.
